Audio Spectra
I made this waveform tunnel visualizer by layering a skewed audio spectrum and applying the polarize effect in After Effects.
I then used the Red Giant Trapcode Form (along with a lot of After Effects expressions) to emit grid particles on beats. Using different blending modes, I was able to use the achieve the fiery/heat distortion effect.
I used this template for live visuals at a concert in the WWU Planetarium in 2018.
3D Animated Shapes
For the lyrics video for "Corundum" by the Dawn Bombs, I used a combination of Trapcode Tao and Mir to create an animated gem and crystalline cave environment.
I tried to make the textures as reflective and crystalline as possible with lighting effects and some texture effects. I animated the texture of the gem so that it periodically gleams from top to bottom.
Particle Animations
Emitter Animations
For one of my commissions, I was asked to put together a fireworks show. I tried to use footage of real fireworks and quickly realized that method wasn't going to work, so I created a wide array of fireworks using Trapcode Particular instead.
For maximum realism, I used auxiliary particle emitters to create lingering smoke effects.
Grid Animations*
For one of my personal projects, I needed to simulate the ocean floor. I started with a sand texture and then added a particle grid fractal animation to approximate how refracting light looks.
I then used fractal noise to create an actual 3D surface, and used the animated texture as the skin for this surface.
Finally, I added a background gradient, added ambient camera movement, and used the particle grid layer from the first step to create shimmering rays of light through the water.
I used similar techniques to create stylized water ripples for "After Silence", a composition by Mieke Doezema. The piece explores the contemplative nature of silence. To capture the mood, I was asked to replicate the bioluminescent plankton in Bellingham's Teddy Bear Cove.
*I also used this technique to create the background animation on this site (desktop only).
3D Animatons/Rigging
Source Filmmaker
After making a mashup of Van McCoy's The Hustle and the Danny Phantom intro theme, I decided to make a nearly shot-for-shot parody remake of the title sequence from the latter. I used models from a wide array of franchises, did some custom texturing, and used After Effects and Premiere with Steam's Source Filmmaker.
Cinema4D / Octane Render
The music group Fluorite commissioned me to make a promo video for one of their releases.
They left the project open-ended, only suggesting I draw inspiration from their former and current logos.
Blender
I love using meme videos an excuse to learn new techniques, so when I did this Dr. Livesey parody animation, I was especially focused on fur/hair simulation and parent/child rigs to have models interact with each other.
The majority was done in Blender, but I also did some compositing in After Effects.
After creating the title theme from King of the Hill using Donkey Kong 64's soundfont, I challenged myself to create a convincing timelapse animation in the DK64 style. To convey the passage of time, I emphasized details such as the banana hoard pile shrinking and peels accumlating.
My animation begins at the 38 second mark.
